Ok,
So I've always been a bit of an embarassment to my family......................
................but in Dot's eyes, at least, I managed to excel myself last weekend.
And the weird thing is that I didn't see anything odd in it at all.
In fact, even with retrospect, I would still do exactly the same thing.
Am I alone in this?
Would you have behaved differently?
Is it a "crafter" thing?
Or a "blogger" thing?
Or is it just a "Lucy Locket having no idea of how to behave" kind of thing?
So, what did I do?
Well, last Saturday, having received a tip-off (via Ravelry and Periwinkle) that one of our local wool shops were selling off Regia Galaxy sock yarn for £1.20 a ball, Dot, Daisy and I popped to said l-w-s to have a looksie.
And there it was.
Perfectly lovely sock wool
for only £1.20.
Bargain-Schmargin.
(Especially as I was one of the unlucky knitters who pounced on the "superwash" bargain sock wool from LIDL only to discover that it wasn't superwash at all)
Anyway.....................................................................
.......................as we were leaving the shop another lady entered.
A few steps down the pavement Dot suddenly said:
"Oh! You know that lady that just went into the shop? That's my English teacher Mrs M!"
So here is the point where normal mothers would have just said
"that's nice dear" and carried on walking to the car.
So why, oh why am I not one of those "normal mothers"?
Because my response was to say "Oh! Right! Let's go and say hello!"
Dot protested.
A lot.
But was duly dragged back into the shop.................................
............where I found said lady teacher (looking at the Regia wool no less) and promptly introduced myself (and made Dot say hello too).
Apparently this is NOT what mother's of 12 year old daughters are meant to do.
Even if it turns out that the teacher is a member of Ravelry and actually reads this blog
But it is TOTALLY what a Lucy Locket type mother does
so, I'm sorry Dot, but you are stuck with me!
And Mrs M - it was lovely to meet you - and fortunately I think Dot has forgiven me! And thank you for the tip off about the new Regia at Kemps! I hope we get to meet up again soon.
But I really am curious..................................
what would you have done in the same circumstances?
It was a wool shop after all.....................I probably wouldn't have done the same thing in the local supermarket..........................would I???????

I think this is hilarious especially as how i happened to get the lovely Mrs M's side of the story at Stitch n Bitch on Thurs and she confirmed Dot's embarassment too lol.. and you need to check out said shops Rowan too... I got 17 balls including 2 skeins of Rowan summer tweed ( 20p each ) for just over £6 - bargain.
If it had been Em's teacher, i would have gone back to say hello as i know her(I work for her too) but if I hadn't known her then I think I would have gone home but then again..... perhaps I would have gone to say hello :-) Jane x
Ummmm, maybe, but usually I am running mad everywhere. But being in a craft shop makes it okay doesn't it?
Well I think it's cool!
Definitely a crafty/blogger thing.
Yes, I would have done the same...and infact did when one day I was coming out of the gym all sweaty and met my DD's teacher going in so I went back and had a chat with her...but then as she was a lot slimmer then me and looked more glamorous
(even though she is older then me)I never went back to the gym just incase we bumped into each other again! lol
I don't know what I'd have done... I am unable to get past the price of the yarn! Crimeny! There'd be a wall-o-wool at my house :)
When my boys were that age it turned out that my very existence was an embarrassment, it didn't really matter what I did, so of course I would have greeted Mrs M with joy and commenced chatting about knitting. :>}
As mothers our only purpose is to embarrass our children, this being the case what you did is perfectly acceptable!
Craft shops are for sharing - I almost always end up chatting to strangers in craft shops....and yes I would have gone back and not only said Hi but made sure she knew about the good deal as well..
Hahaha! I would have done the same thing. Besides, you can reason with Dot, if the teacher is already reading your blog, you've been found out, so it's best that you KNOW that she's reading. Right???
That is INEXCUSABLE behaviour! Well, I would have thought so at Dot's age, but I am now perfectly happy to join in on the random conversations my mother has with old friends and teachers... but you forget about how embarrassing everything is when you're a teenager and one day I hope to thoroughly embarrass any children I may have. It's all part of growing up, isn't it?!
Oh, and the fact that Mrs.M is a knitter definitely means she's "one of us" and is probably just as nutty :-)
LOL- I am totally with Goosey here...My 14-yearold tells me to "behave", but I keep telling her that I'm her mum, so I'm supposed to embarrass her...;-)
I would have done the same thing at the wool shop or the grocery store :O)
Can imagine this... I have a 13 year old who would react the same! I'm sure she's over it by the time she's......older
Eldest son knows me far too well to ever tell me that he's seen a teacher. Mind you, I would in all honesty have run a mile away from any of his teachers, just incase they told me how bad his behaviour is and would I please keep him under control and where is his last piece of homework and why does he insist on chatting throughout their lessons and why is he always late...
Oh no, I would never go up to a teacher first!
Of course I would have done the same thing unless I had been dragged half way done the block by the embarassed teen. I think it is part of our job to embarass our kids - didn't our parents do that to us too?!! Cherrie
Of course you did the right thing we crafdty blogging types are all very chatty! My daughter finds me embarassing most of the time I think, I have several knitting and crochted hats that I'm not supposed to wear when I collect her from school....but of course I do!
Sounds perfectly normal to me. Lucas is 20 and I'm still embarrassing him. Tell Dotty there are a lot more years to come. Keep it up Mrs Locket.
Yep I'm pretty sure I would have done the same
Well first of all for snapping up that sock yarn at such a bargain price! I have to say I would be more likely to chat with someone in a crafty setting than in the supermarket. So yes, I would have embarrassed my children by talking to their teacher for sure!!!
A teacher in a wool shop? Well, it would have been rude not to say hello!
But I do feel a bit sorry for Dot ;-)
Well, as I'm the teacher in question, I think its perfectly acceptable! At last, a parent I don't need to hide from when I bump into them! I certainly saw the funny side....
Anything goes in a craft/wool/fabric shop. But I think I'd be more embarrassed than Dot if I thought teachers at school were privy to the embarrassments of my blog!
100% crafter!!!
xxx
just a thimbleful....
Absolutely agree with Goosey & Marit - mothers always embarrass their children, it is par for the course.
Wonder where your wool shop is? NO, NO, I don't NEED any more stuff !
Oh.Poor.Dot!!!!
I kind of know how she feels but at least I don't have to live with you!
I'm more concerned about the fact that you have that super bargain wool shop so close to home and never told me! I've been on their website several times but to think of a real life shop full of bargain wool is almost too much to bear.

Poor Dot . . . . but after all . . . . . . . . . that's what mothers are for!!
Amy constantly tells me I embarass her in public so you're definitely not alone there! I think you're right about it making a difference that it was a wool shop - knitters are definitely more friendly!
I think it is perfectly reasonable behaviour... in fact I think it is a parent's duty to embarass ones children. And the older I get the more I seem to do it! (I might not agree if I was Dot's age though)
TOTALLY something I would have done! (Dude, the teacher is a KNITTER - we can't help but band together.) I've walked up to "strangers" in local eateries and introduced myself by saying, "Hello, I work for the Sisters XXX and I have seen you at our offices..." Needless to say, TBG heads straight for the car - completely horrified! Pitty TLG his future maternal embarassments?
LOL - that is the best story...and in your defence, Dot was the one to point her out! :o) You are in good company...I recently went to a parent teacher meeting and had more fun trading stories with DD1's ICT teacher than talking about DD1 and her progress! :o)
I think Twiglets teacher thinks I'm a bit nuts anyway, so I would have done exactly the same :)
Twiggy x
Ohhhh that is sooooo something I would do....
I have to tell you Locket, that if I'd done that to one of No.1's teachers, No.1 would have dealt me one of 'those looks' which would have made my blood freeze instantly in my body. And she would never forgive me. Never.
I admire you though - good for you - you keep it up. Dot will probably look back and laugh at that story when she's got a 12 yr old of her own to embarrass ;-)
x
I can't believe I haven't commented yet. I am a little behind on things!
I think it's ace that you said hello. Miss Dot could have hidden behind the wool.
As a mum to a 12 yr old daughter, it is my goal to be embarassing mum...unfortunately she thinks I am cool at the moment( her friends love the jewellery I make them!!)
I think all her teachers hide from their pupils but if I find one, I will do my utmost to embarass her!
