Local bloggy friends

On Monday the little Lockets and I had a bloggy meet up at Sunderland Museum with Lisa and her two little boys and Sarah and her daughter and son.

We all had a really lovely time and it was interesting to see how quickly the children made friends with each other. The boys broke the ice instantly when Fred brought out his "crazy bones" while the girls took a bit longer to get talking. In fact it actually started with lots of giggling as Daisy took on the role of Number 1 Clown and entertained them all with her vast repertoire of bizarre faces. After that they were all firm friends!

Meanwhile Sarah, Lisa and I had a lovely time chatting over hot chocolate and cake.

We then went to visit the incredibly ugly fish in the Winter Gardens

followed by a trip to Milo's favourite part of the museum - the old fashioned "house" where children could play with pots and pans etc - at one stage I think all 7 children were crammed in the tiny space!

This particular section of the museum was really interesting as they had displays comparing life/food/expenditure/income etc in 1919, 1949, 1969 and 1999 - amazingly in the first two years a pint of beer was actually cheaper than a loaf of bread!

But it was this display that really caught my attention

I immediately thought "Oooooh! Look at that gorgeous knitted bunny!"

Then I read the caption underneath

and was so disappointed with how it was phrased about how "people had to make do with home made toys" - I know this is how it would have seemed then but it still seems sad to me!

It was really lovely to see Sarah again and to meet Lisa for the first time and all the children were so well behaved and friendly - a great day! (even if ours did end with an extortionately expensive school shoe shopping session!!!)

Then yesterday we finally made it back up to the allotment after about 4 months of avoiding it! Because this is really a "craft blog" I have decided to create a special allotment blog over here so I can keep a record but you don't have to read it if you don't want to!!!!

But that bunny looks so cool - I can imagine that in one of those oh-so-inspirational home magazines!

Good luck with your new blog, I'm sure you'll have loads of green-fingered followers before you know it!

Sheesh! Those museum people!! I don't think it is a rabbit at all, that body is too long. I think it is a native English hare ;-)

(btw - word verif is 'redness'!)

I gues that 'have to make do' attitude is why so many people are still averse to presents handmade by their friends. Such a pity because everything has to be made and handmade is usually so much better in quality as well as love. Cherrie

I'm off to have a look at the allotment blog, this is my first season with mine so I want to see when should be planting things! Assuming I can bend over enough to reach the soil, so bump willing we'll have some tasty veggies :)

Hmm they could have phrased it better. They didn't "have to make do" they just made their own toys. That bunny is just as good as a bought one!

That bunny has been crossed with a sausage dog. A sausage bunny? I don't like the 'making do' comment either, but it's made me think about crafting in wartime - I bet that was really difficult - no supplies for stash, etc. Crikey, must have been awful :-( (That's on top of all the other awfulness of war).

Glad you had a lovely bloggy time.

Oooh fun -- an allotment blog -- you must remind me once in awhile that it's there 'cause I don't have a category for allotment blogs LOL! Sounds like you had a wonderful day -- ugly fish and all!

I agree the wording is not nice, bunny is cute and i have a tiny knitted Humpty Dumpty which was always my favourite and it was made in the 60's. Those fish are amazing. Jane x

Rats, I am at least two posts behind. First, I want your postman/lady if he/she puts goodies like those (the previous post) in your mailbox.. You can have mine - he/she only brings me bills and political pamphlets. Next, I think that the times-they-are-a-changing: now, if I can't make a handmade gift for someone, I "make do" with some plastic thing from Target/local department store. Alright, maybe we haven't quite got to that wonderful point yet, but one can dream. Finally, I quite enjoyed reading about your allotment - it's something new to me and very fascinating! Yes, the boots- why? Hope the toe is well now.

I dont think the sign is meant as the people back then had to make do,because that simply was what was on offer, very few would have been able to purchase manufactured toys, I think its aimed from sadly a modern perspective as in oh poor them they had to make do with that, which sadly for alot of people & their children is how they will view a display like that.

Children these days have so much compared to back then,I remember my mum saying how her 2 sisters & her & the 3 brothers shared rooms,I sid how did oyu all fit in & she said well there was only one small wardrobe & they had a drawer each, you had your school uniform & then an outfit which you wore out of school,if you were really lucky you might have another skirt or jumper that was For Best Only.
My girls dont have half the clothes between them I have seen some single children have but they still have far more than when I was little even, let alone compared to my mum, gran etc.
